What Is Dimension?
The separation of business data according to different "perspectives." A logical designation of related information that applies a hierarchy for access and reporting, taking into consideration the granularity of the related items. For example, a Time dimension can include year, quarter, month, day, hour, minute, second, and a Geography dimension can include continent, country, state, region, city, street, and house. By implementing shared dimensions that can be used across numerous data marts, IT reduces its workload and provides consistent data and measures throughout the enterprise.
